"It was just thick black smoke coming out of the window," says Tyree Scribener.
It was a sudden scream from the side of the home that alerted them to a dangling arm from a bedroom window. The pair jumped a small fence and pulled Karen May Schultz out to safety. The flames and smoke proved to be too much for Karen's husband Lloyd Schultz. Firefighters found the Kroger deli worker dead in a hallway.
"He had a very great personality," says Karen Dunlap.
Dunlap is the Manager of the Spring Hill Goodwill where Karen is the lead cashier and office assistant.
"Her first name is Karen but we call her LeAnne," says Dunlap.
According to Dunlap, the Schultz' had been married just over a year.
"They were such a sweet couple and he was just so loving with her," says Dunlap. "They just matched, you know?"
Meanwhile, Jackson and Scribner said they couldn't sleep all night thinking about the woman they rescued.
"We were just in the right place at the right time," says Scribener.
They're very reluctant to take the title "Heroes".
"I would want someone to help me if I was back there," says Scribener.
The Goodwill in Spring Hill, as well as the Kroger on Nashville Highway in Columbia are collecting money to help with funeral expenses. The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but officers say they did find a number of space heaters inside the home.
