WBFF Fox 45 :: School Safety is on the Minds of Education Leaders in Sumner Co.
Sumner County education leaders want armed officers in every school. It's an expensive proposal that will require finding from the County Commission. The Commission met to consider a proposal that would have added 20 school resource officers, enough to cover middle and high schools, but after some discussion, officials said it would be unfair to leave any school unprotected. Ultimately, the Board voted to ask for over 30 additional SRO's, enough to place an armed officer at all 46 county schools. Right now there are only SRO's at the county's 7 high schools. One board member believes the money could come from what the county calls its "hospital" or rainy day fund.

"It is specifically for a rainy day, I think you would consider this a rainy day event and we need to provide a safe environment as much as possible," says Board Chairman Ted Wise.

"I feel really good that they're going to step up to the plate," says Director of Schools Dr. Del Phillips.

The school board and county commission have a long history of budget battles, including a stalemate that delayed the start of school last Fall. Officials are hoping those differences will be set aside for the sake of school safety.

2 appellate court judges are stepping down
May 24, 2013 21:29 GMT

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- Two Tennessee appellate court judges have notified Gov. Bill Haslam that they will not run for another term on the bench in the August 2014 retention election.

Patricia J. Cottrell, a judge on the Court of Appeals, and Joseph M. Tipton, who sits on the Court of Criminal Appeals bench, will both leave after September of next year.

The announcements come after the state legislature left Tennessee without a way to replace judges who step down or die when a commission expires at the end of next month.

Members of the soon-to-be-defunct Judicial Nominating Commission will make recommendations for replacements to give to Haslam before the panel expires. Haslam will appoint the replacements from those recommendations.
