WBFF Fox 45 :: Small Business Saturday Good For Business In East Nashville- Erica Shaffer

Small Business Saturday is a chance for local retailers to get the boost they need.
But some stores in East Nashville say... This is the most important Small Business Saturday in years.
Businesses in East Nashville say they are still feeling the effects of this summer's I-24 weekend shut downs ...making this year's Small Business Saturday a "make or break" for several unique shops and services in East Nashville.
For some small business owners their store is a product of an idea and taking a risk to "give it all you've got"
Bil Breyer says, “This is my work this is what I do and I get no other income anywhere else.”
For others... A store is a dream in the making...
Small Business Saturday is a chance to meet and support owners and their dreams
Chuck Beard says, “Shedding a light on that urgency -that hey the person that is a part time worker at a barista or serving on the restaurants during the weekends have a store on the week days and that is there real passion.”
Customers like Mary Lou and Tom Allen know that... They drove from Goodlettsville just to support East Nashville during Small Business Saturday.
Mary Lou Allen and Tom Allen says, “There’s all the box stores and everybody is shopping at the big places - come and support the local stuff- you find stuff that aren't in the box stores.”
But this year the event and purchases from customers like the Allen's could make the difference in whether small business owners in the area will be able to continue to follow their dreams or not...
Businesses here in East Nashville say the 13 weekends 1-24 was shut down for construction took a bite out of their profits.
Bil Breyer says, “People don't think about the impact on a small business of closing a road and that was the main artery into East Nashville and yeah we suffered quite a bit.”
Many stores say as far as sales this has been the biggest Small Business Saturday they've seen.
Bil Breyer says, “We're always going to have unique things we are going to have different things that anybody else and you are supporting families.”
Business owners say they hope after today customers will keep coming back.
And today even President Obama took time to support local business on Small Business Saturday by stopping at a book store in Arlington, Virginia with his daughters.

By KRISTIN M. HALL Associated Press

BAGRAM AIR FIELD, Afghanistan (AP) -- With Afghan troops increasingly leading combat operations on the ground, the Afghan Air Force's fledgling helicopter fleet based in Kabul has learned new techniques to support them from the air.

The U.S. Army's 101st Combat Aviation Brigade started a new training program at Bagram Air Field for Afghan helicopter pilots to learn how to perform air assault missions, which they have started to use in combat operations.

101st Combat Aviation Brigade Commander Col. Paul Bontrager said the Afghans need to be weaned off American aviation during the drawdown of U.S. forces this year.

The ability of Afghan helicopters to quickly drop soldiers into combat is a new and critical role.
