WBFF Fox 45 :: Striking Home Survives Lightning, Others Not So Lucky
Tonight firefighters say a Hermitage homeowner is lucky the damage wasn't worse after his home was struck by lightning. The bolt struck this home on Stewarts Ferry Pike near the Davidson/Wilson County line. Firefighters say the lightning struck metal on the roof and the energy blew out a section of drywall on the 2nd floor of the house. Firefighters say this homeowner was lucky because lightning strikes like this have been known to destroy homes.

"Typically with these high charged storms that we see come in in the afternoons, we see a lot of stuff like that, not always with a beginning and ending like this," says Nashville District Fire Chief Jim Norman. "Where it is just kind of a charge that had to find an entry and an exit, but a lot of times it moves, significant house fires are caused by lightning."

Chief Norman says lightning rods can prevent devastating lightning damage to your home by sending the energy directly down to the ground and away from your home.Striking Home Survives Lightning, Others Not So Lucky

2 appellate court judges are stepping down
May 24, 2013 21:29 GMT

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- Two Tennessee appellate court judges have notified Gov. Bill Haslam that they will not run for another term on the bench in the August 2014 retention election.

Patricia J. Cottrell, a judge on the Court of Appeals, and Joseph M. Tipton, who sits on the Court of Criminal Appeals bench, will both leave after September of next year.

The announcements come after the state legislature left Tennessee without a way to replace judges who step down or die when a commission expires at the end of next month.

Members of the soon-to-be-defunct Judicial Nominating Commission will make recommendations for replacements to give to Haslam before the panel expires. Haslam will appoint the replacements from those recommendations.
