WBFF Fox 45 :: Terror Drill Inside Midstate College - Scott Couch
FRANKLIN, Tenn. - When the first officers arrived at the elementary school in Sandy Hook, Connecticut back in December, they promptly entered the building to engage the gunman. It's a shift in tactics police departments across the country adopted after the Columbine massacre. Thursday, Williamson County lawmen staged a school assault so they'll be ready if it ever happens for real. The training took place at Columbia State Community College in Franklin. Officers from Franklin and Brentwood and County Sheriff's Deputies worked together, making their way past people pretending to be terrified students, some of them wounded, searching for the gunman. It's a frightening scenario, but something police have to prepare for.

"By doing this multi-agency training exercise, it gives us an opportunity to realistically respond to something in a training environment and work together, where otherwise we might be training with just our individual officers," says Brentwood Police Chief Jeff Hughes.

These agencies have been doing active shooter training for years. The departments say they hope to do more of these multilevel exercises in the future. Friday, Fort Campbell will go over its plan to handle a large scale disaster. You'll see lots of military presence surrounding the Hopkinsville Convention Center in the afternoon. TSU and the Metro Health Department will hold a bio terrorism exercise the same day. Those drills will take place at Antioch and McGavock High Schools.

Solar panels that obscure school might be moved
May 24, 2013 13:13 GMT

ROGERSVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- A wall of solar panels in front of a Surgoinsville school might be moved out back.

The panels are part of an ambitious project under which solar collection panels have been installed at 20 Hawkins County school facilities to cut utility costs and sell back power to TVA.

But the Kingsport Times-News (http://bit.ly/18burcf ) reported the wall of panels at Surgoinsville Middle School has some people worried about school security and others upset at what they see as an eyesore.

The panels are 7 feet high and stretch the length of a football field. They obscure viewing the school.

At a school board work session Thursday, board members talked about moving the array. It can't be voted on until the regular board meeting on June 4.
