WBFF Fox 45 :: UPDATE: SPECIAL REPORT: WASTE WATCH: Per Diem
NASHVILLE, Tenn. - A FOX17 WASTE WATCH follow up. We first told you about per diem in a WASTE WATCH SPECIAL REPORT earlier this month. That's the money state lawmakers get for hotels and food simply for showing up to session, even if they live near the capitol. Now a bill working to get rid of the automatic money is moving through the House. It passed the State Government Committee Tuesday. Republican Rick Womick (R-Murfreesboro) is sponsoring the plan to cut the $107 hotel reimbursement for lawmakers who live within 50 miles of the Capitol.

"It's the right thing to do and it's living up to the promise we made to our constituents that's smarter government, smaller government, and get rid of the fraud, waste and the abuse," says Representative Womick.

Opponents say that money can be used for other expenses and are worried it would close public office to people who aren't wealthy. You can find all our WASTE WATCH stories on Fox17.com. Trial begins in international custody case
May 21, 2013 08:06 GMT

By SHEILA BURKE Associated Press

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- A trial begins Tuesday that could determine which country will decide the fate of 13-year-old twin boys at the center of an international custody battle that extends from Eastern Europe to Middle Tennessee.

The boys are American citizens who were born in Texas but have spent the majority of their lives in Hungary. Their father is an American citizen with family in the Cottontown community of Sumner County. Their mother, a Romanian national, has invoked an international treaty claiming the children are being wrongfully retained in Tennessee by their father.

The boys came to Tennessee last year to visit their paternal grandparents in Sumner County for the summer. The father, who was supposed to bring them back to Europe, stayed in the U.S. and filed for divorce.
