People being wounded, including a 5 year old girl. Little Tamika Nelson and at least 3 other victims were caught in the crossfire of a running gun battle that witnesses say erupted without warning. This was the scene early Thursday on Charles E. Davis Boulevard off Murfreesboro Road. 5 people wounded in a shootout between 2 men that erupted in a courtyard full of people. Dnomyar Nelson's 5 year old daughter Tamika left the scene in an ambulance.
"She got grazed in her neck, grazed behind her ear, off her side and shot in her arm," says Nelson.
The little girl was rushed to Vanderbilt along with 2 men who were even more seriously wounded. A 3rd man believed to have been involved in the shooting drove himself to the hospital.
"We do have a weapon at the scene and several shell casings," says Metro Police Captain Ken Walburn. "Our ID unit is here and they'll be processing that evidence."
Police don't know what started the shooting. The light of day found neighbors less interested in what the beef was about than the fact the gunmen decided to fight it out with so many innocent people in harm's way.
"Why would you all shoot in the midst of a crows of kids like that with bullets," says neighbor Thomariskist Beck. "Bullets don't have eyes."
One of those bullets crashed through the window of Chemetria Jeffers' apartment. It's an apartment she shares with her 9 children. Jeffers says this neighborhood is not a safe place.
"It could have went in but luckily God was with my children and nothing happened to them," says Jeffers. "So Amen to that."
Residents fear there could be a next time and next time they won't be so lucky. Metro Police are still investigating, but have not made any arrests in this case. We're glad to report 5 year old Tamika Nelson was released from the hospital earlier today.

Man pleads guilty to Memphis officer's murder
May 21, 2013 22:22 GMT
MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) -- A former death row inmate is set to be released from prison after he pleaded guilty to second-degree murder of a Memphis police officer.
Shelby County District Attorney Amy Weirich said Tuesday that she has accepted Timothy McKinney's guilty plea.
McKinney was convicted of first-degree murder for the fatal shooting of Officer Don Williams. The officer was killed outside a comedy club in December 1997.
McKinney appealed and won a new trial, which ended with a deadlocked jury. A third trial earlier this year also ended in a hung jury.
The Commercial Appeal reports that McKinney was sentenced to 15 years in prison. Since he's already served more than 15 years -- including 11 on death row -- McKinney will be released this week.
Williams' family opposed the settlement.
