WBFF Fox 45 :: Advocates Say Animal Seizures Call for Tougher Laws in Tenn.
Some say 2 recent high profile animal rescues are a sign Tennessee needs tougher laws. Nearly 200 animals have been seized in Middle Tennessee and taken to the State Fairgrounds in just the last 2 weeks. Some say legal changes could prevent that in the future. Nearly 200 animals, each with serious problems. Some of the dogs are unsocialized. The Animal Rescue Corps believes it's the result of poor conditions at the Wilson County home they were seized from last week.

"Tennessee is not tolerating animal abuse," says Scotlund Haisley of the Animal Rescue Corps. "The authorities are contacting us, asking us to assist."

Haisley says that explains why his group has been so busy in Tennessee lately. The organization is also caring for animals seized in a White County raid Monday, and some wonder if a few changes might prevent the next one.

"Aggravated Animal Cruelty is a felony for companion animals, but you have to get the DA to prosecute," says Rep. Janis Sontany (D-Nashville).

Rep. Sontany says too many animal abusers don't face charges. She also says Tennessee needs actual penalties for failing to spay or neuter pets. Some states fine owners, but in Tennessee the law only requires you to pay a minimum $25 deposit and promise to have your pet spayed or neutered in 30 days. Changes some say are absolutely necessary to avoid the next packed room of pets.Advocates Say Animal Seizures Call for Tougher Laws in Tenn.

Miss. chooses new firm to run Woodville prison
May 18, 2013 20:50 GMT

WOODVILLE, Miss. (AP) -- Mississippi officials have picked a new company to run the Wilkinson County Correctional Facility.

Utah-based Management and Training Corp. announced Friday that the Mississippi Department of Corrections has chosen it to run the 1,000-bed prison starting July 1, the Natchez Democrat reports (http://bit.ly/10MvOGv).

Corrections Corporation of America, based in Nashville, Tenn., had run the prison since 1998. MTC says it will keep "the vast majority" of employees.

MTC will get a five-year contract to run the prison with two one-year options. Last year, officials chose MTC to take over East Mississippi Correctional Facility, the Walnut Grove Correctional Facility and the Marshall County Correctional Facility from the GEO Group. MTC won 10-year contracts for each.

CCA still runs the Tallahatchie County Correctional Facility and the Adams County Correctional Center in Mississippi.
