A 37 year old man is in jail, charged with shooting the victim and allegedly cutting his head off with a shovel.
It was a shocking discovery. A mailman found a decomposing decapitated body found in a field. The man had tattoos on his arm and back.
The man lived nearby.
"I'm at a loss for words. I couldn't even begin to tell you how I feel," says the victim's wife Ashly Thompson.
Ashly Thompson grieves the loss of her husband, 48 year old Erman Thompson.
The Thompsons lived on Claiborne Street with three children and another man, the alleged killer, 37 year old Henry Baxter.
Detectives believe the two men were alone in the house arguing over the victim's wife, whom they both cared for, when Baxter pulled a gun.
Police say Baxter shot and killed Thompson on Sunday and dumped his body in a trashcan. The next night, police say he came back.
"It was under the cover of darkness on Monday night, when he borrowed a shovel, decapitated the body, put both the severed head and the body back in the trash can," says Don Aaron with Metro Police.
Police say Baxter confessed to crime. He allegedly told investigators he returned the following night, and pushed the trash can to a nearby field. Baxter allegedly dumped Erwan Thompson's body, and left the head in the can.
A neighbor found the head late Thursday night.
The alleged motive for the crime involves a love triangle.
The Thompsons are husband and wife, but they also had adopted the 37 year old suspect.
What's even stranger is that Baxter has a child with Ashly Thompson.
"We believed that Baxter fathered a child with this lady, the victim fathered a child with this lady, and there may be a third individual involved with the third child," says Don Aaron with Metro Police.
Ashly Thompson says she's trying to remain strong for the sake of her children. One father is dead, another is in jail.
"I can deal with it as best as I can, but how do you tell three small children that they lost their daddy," says Thompson.
Henry Baxter is in the Metro Jail charged with criminal homicide.
Police say he told Ashly Thompson that her husband had left the family. The truth was revealed on Thursday.

Bonnaroo and then what? More events could follow
May 20, 2013 12:33 GMT
MANCHESTER, Tenn. (AP) -- The former farm where the Bonnaroo music festival is held may play host to other events as well.
The partnership that puts on the annual music and arts festival in Manchester has steadily upgraded the site, adding a dozen water wells and permanent electrical power.
Festival partner Rick Farman told The Tennessean (http://tnne.ws/14nuEF5 ) his group is in active discussion with a lot of groups. The Great American Mud Run will be held at the site on July 27 and is expected to draw more than 5,000 participants.
Coffee County Mayor David Pennington said he's curious to see where such a plan could go, saying it could have a huge impact.
This year's Bonnaroo will be held June 13-16. Paul McCartney heads a long list if acts.
