UPDATE: Justice Department files lawsuit requiring mosque to open in Murfreesboro
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - A Muslim congregation in Tennessee is asking a federal judge to let it move into its newly built mosque before Ramadan begins.
The Islamic Center of Murfreesboro sued Rutherford County on Wednesday and asked the court to let worshippers into the building before the holy month starts at sundown Thursday.
In May, a Rutherford County judge in the spring overturned the county's approval of the mosque construction and this month ordered the county not to issue an occupancy permit for the 12,000-square-foot building. He found that the county didn't give adequate public notice for the meeting that approved the mosque.
The congregation's lawsuit claims its constitutional guarantees of freedom of religion and equal protection are being violated. The legal fight over the mosque has been ongoing since 2010

Houston brother will be his own attorney in court
June 18, 2013 13:02 GMT
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- A Roane County man will face federal gun violation charges next month without an attorney.
The Knoxville News Sentinel (http://bit.ly/17VlXpM ) reported Rocky Joe Houston will represent himself on a charge of possession of a gun by a felon.
The charge came after Houston earlier represented himself in state court on charges stemming from a police chase. He was convicted of evading arrest and reckless endangerment.
Houston and his brother, Leon Houston, were tried, but not convicted, in the 2006 shooting deaths of a Roane County deputy and his ride-along companion.
In federal court, Rocky Joe Houston is claiming the officer who charged him with the felony had no legal authority.
