WBFF Fox 45 :: Tax Free Weekend Won't Come in Time for School Supplies
For the first time since it started 7 years ago, Metro Schools start a new year before the state's sales tax holiday. That means Davidson County families who want their children prepared from day one will have to spend more on back to school supplies. Big box retailers like Target are banking on back to school, but pencils and notebooks at the White Bridge Road store aren't exactly flying off the shelves. The only families shopping now are the ones who've decided to forget about the money they could save by waiting for the state's tax free weekend.

"They're expected to have the supplies when they show up for school which is a pity because I understand the weekend after is the tax free holiday on it," says grandparent David Poore.

Metro schools start back August 1. The tax free holiday this year is August 3-5, but the State Revenue Department says don't blame us.

"The sales tax holiday in Tennessee is legislatively scheduled for the first full weekend of August and that's inclusive of the Friday, Saturday and Sunday," says Billy Trout with the Tennessee Department of Revenue.

People who live in most other Midstate counties will still get to cash in because their schools start back after the holiday. It's a tough pill for people like Sandy Schwarcz, who's trying to help her grandsons find the perfect backpack.

"Absolutely because 10% is a lot of tax," says grandparent Sandy Schwarcz.

There was some conversation among state lawmakers about pushing the Tennessee sales tax holiday back a few weeks. One bill would have pushed it back a week and another 2 weeks, but both died before ever coming up for a vote. The good news is the sales tax holiday applies to computers less than $1500, including tablets. There's a $100 limit on clothes, enough to get a designer gown at David's Bridal. If you're really on a budget, we found another gown for $78. If you can wait a few weeks, it'll be tax free. While it's scheduled to help families get back to school, the tax free weekend is for everybody. Couple's bodies found in their Blount County home
May 20, 2013 20:14 GMT

LOUISVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- The Blount (blunt) County sheriff's office says preliminary results of autopsies on the bodies of a couple found dead in their home in Louisville (LEW'-ihs-vil) show their deaths are consistent with murder-suicide.

Marian O'Briant said in an email that it appears 54-year-old Steven Adkins shot 53-year-old Rebecca Adkins, then shot himself.

O'Briant said a family member found the bodies Sunday night. It wasn't clear how long they had been dead.
