Exactly one week from today, Metro students will head back to school! If the August 1 start seems early, that's because it is. The new balanced calendar moves the first day of classes up 2 weeks early. Are your kids ready? Olivia Brown with Metro Schools joined us earlier on TENNESSEE MORNINGS. She says the most important thing is to make sure your child is vaccinated, especially 7th graders.
"They have to be on a Tennessee required immunization certificate and they just bring that to school," says Olivia Brown. "They may already have it at school, but it's a good time to check and make sure and if their child doesn't have it, get that taken care of."
Brown says you can get the shots from your own doctor or at the Metro Health Department. She says if your children are not up-to-date on shots, they will not be able to go to school, unless there are religious exemptions. Man pleads guilty to Memphis officer's murder

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) -- A former death row inmate is set to be released from prison after he pleaded guilty to second-degree murder of a Memphis police officer.
Shelby County District Attorney Amy Weirich said Tuesday that she has accepted Timothy McKinney's guilty plea.
McKinney was convicted of first-degree murder for the fatal shooting of Officer Don Williams. The officer was killed outside a comedy club in December 1997.
McKinney appealed and won a new trial, which ended with a deadlocked jury. A third trial earlier this year also ended in a hung jury.
The Commercial Appeal reports that McKinney was sentenced to 15 years in prison. Since he's already served more than 15 years -- including 11 on death row -- McKinney will be released this week.
Williams' family opposed the settlement.
