WBFF Fox 45 :: Tips to Prevent Leaving Children in Hot Cars
It happened again today. A child was accidentally left inside a vehicle, but help arrived quickly. A new mom told police she accidentally locked her baby in the car with the air conditioner running. Police pried the door open and the child wasn't hurt. On Tuesday, 5 month old Joel Gray died inside his mother's minivan. Stephanie Gray told officers she took her older children to school, but forgot to drop Joel off at daycare. Experts recommend creating a routine where you check the backseat.

"If you are taking the child, put your purse, your briefcase, your laptop, your cell phone, put someing in the backseat with your child so that no matter what, if the child wasn't in the car you would be taking it with you," says Vanderbilt Safe Child Program's Sarah Haverstick.

"If a child is accidentally left in the vehicle, it's not a matter of irresponsibility, it's a matter of brain failure," says safety advocate Dee Newman. "You need to be able to remind yourself that that child is in that vehicle."

In just a few minutes, the temperature inside a vehicle can hit 100 degrees. Doctors say because children's bodies aren't fully developed, they can be overcome by heat very quickly.Tips to Prevent Leaving Children in Hot Cars

2 appellate court judges are stepping down
May 24, 2013 21:29 GMT

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- Two Tennessee appellate court judges have notified Gov. Bill Haslam that they will not run for another term on the bench in the August 2014 retention election.

Patricia J. Cottrell, a judge on the Court of Appeals, and Joseph M. Tipton, who sits on the Court of Criminal Appeals bench, will both leave after September of next year.

The announcements come after the state legislature left Tennessee without a way to replace judges who step down or die when a commission expires at the end of next month.

Members of the soon-to-be-defunct Judicial Nominating Commission will make recommendations for replacements to give to Haslam before the panel expires. Haslam will appoint the replacements from those recommendations.
