WBFF Fox 45 :: Sumner County Closer to a Solution
A new development in the school budget battle in Sumner County. Voters will soon decide if the school system should receive more money. The County Commission just approved a Wheel Tax Referendum for the November ballot. Sumner County voters will decide if they want to pay an extra $25 to renew their tags. All of that extra money would go to schools. The County Commission voted by a wide margin to allow the referendum on the November ballot. It would take the vehicle registration fee from $76 to $101 a year. If voters approve the increase, it would generate an extra $3 million for the school system. During the school budget dispute, many people said raise my taxes.

"Being a presidential election there will be a heavy turnout, so the citizens of Sumner County for once and for all should come out in droves and either vote for a wheel tax or they won't," says Commissioner Chris Hughes.

"The Sumner County school system needs the money in order to provide this type of education we've always provided in Sumner County," says Commissioner Baker Ring.

Earlier this year, Sumner County voters overwhelmingly rejected a $25 wheel tax increase, but after the last 2 weeks with schools being closed, it's possible voters may have changed their minds.Sumner County Closer to a Solution

Man facing extradition for murder claims innocence
June 17, 2013 20:24 GMT

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) -- A former U.S. Marine facing extradition to the Philippines on double murder charges says he is innocent.

Timothy Kaufman has been in jail since his arrest in April at business near his grandfather's Albany-area home. The 35-year-old from Knoxville, Tenn., is one of three men charged by Philippine authorities with killing a retired Northern Ireland police officer and his girlfriend in 2011.

Authorities claim it was a premeditated killing in an area known for its sometimes-seamy club scene.

In a handwritten letter sent to the media from jail, Kaufman says he would never do something as "heinous and stupid" as killing the couple. He says he left the country after the killings because he feared for his safety.

An extradition hearing is scheduled for June 25 in Albany federal court.
