WBFF Fox 45 :: UPDATE: FOX17 Sits with Anxious Mother, Waiting for Results on Baby's Surgery
We first introduced baby Phoenix with his twin last month. Phoenix was diagnosed with a birth defect called Tetrology of Fallout or Blue Baby Syndrome. Now baby Phoenix' mother has allowed FOX17 to follow her very emotional journey through surgery. Open heart surgery is risky for anyone, but as you can imagine, watching your 5 month old having to undergo this procedure is terrifying. She wants to educate people on Blue Baby Syndrome, but more importantly to prepare other parents who have children with Blue Baby Syndrome by showing them what they'll be going through. This story will take you through his journey to a normal life. It's 10am at Vanderbilt Children's Hospital, and the Garretts have done everything they can to prepare for this moment.

The baby's short life has not been easy, but he still smiles. What can happen to him is extremely serious. He can turn blue or pass out if he doesn't get enough oxygen in his blood. Even with the hope that surgery brings, there's always a risk.

Mom uses the 4-hour wait to soak up every bit of Phoenix before he goes into the operating room. Then, more waiting. Once the surgery begins, it will last about 6 hours. Surgeons will remove a pulmonary valve, open the area that pumps the blood to the lungs, and close a hole between the lower chambers of the heart.

Dr. Christian says the age of the baby lowers the risk. Ideally the baby should be between 3-6 months. Then finally, it's time. It's an emotional parting, but Misty Garrett doesn't say goodbye. We are happy to report Phoenix is doing well. He was taken off of his breathing tube this afternoon, but unfortunately the Garrett's believe in the next year he will need one more open heart surgery. Certainly happy this one is over with.

The Garrett family is in need of a lot of help to fund doctors and surgeons for baby Phoenix. If you would like to help, you can send a donation to the Cornerstone Credit Union in Dickson under Phoenix Garrett's name.UPDATE: FOX17 Sits with Anxious Mother, Waiting for Results on Baby's Surgery

May 25, 2013 20:14 GMT

SMYRNA, Tenn. (AP) -- Authorities say a body has been found in Percy Priest Lake in Middle Tennessee.

WSMV-TV (http://bit.ly/16gYKys) reports officials with Metro Police, the Office of Emergency Management and Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency were at the scene Saturday at Hole In The Wall Island. The body was reported to authorities about 11 a.m.

TWRA officials say they believe the deceased man is a boater who disappeared in the lake two weeks ago.

Police said the agencies coordinated with each other to get a boat in the water and recover the body.
