The baby's short life has not been easy, but he still smiles. What can happen to him is extremely serious. He can turn blue or pass out if he doesn't get enough oxygen in his blood. Even with the hope that surgery brings, there's always a risk.
Mom uses the 4-hour wait to soak up every bit of Phoenix before he goes into the operating room. Then, more waiting. Once the surgery begins, it will last about 6 hours. Surgeons will remove a pulmonary valve, open the area that pumps the blood to the lungs, and close a hole between the lower chambers of the heart.
Dr. Christian says the age of the baby lowers the risk. Ideally the baby should be between 3-6 months. Then finally, it's time. It's an emotional parting, but Misty Garrett doesn't say goodbye. We are happy to report Phoenix is doing well. He was taken off of his breathing tube this afternoon, but unfortunately the Garrett's believe in the next year he will need one more open heart surgery. Certainly happy this one is over with.
The Garrett family is in need of a lot of help to fund doctors and surgeons for baby Phoenix. If you would like to help, you can send a donation to the Cornerstone Credit Union in Dickson under Phoenix Garrett's name.
