WBFF Fox 45 :: Our Idol Expert Brian Mansfield Shares His
Brian Mansfield is one of the happiest, most talkative people I know.
We at Fox 17 have gotten to know him from his visits to the studio as our expert idol panelist.

Normally he writes a blog for USA Today called "Idol Chatter", but
these days Mansfield writes about all things colon in his new blog
called "My Semicolon Life.

"That is what I do, I tell stories, so
the only stories that make sense to tell are stories that are
difficult, embarrassing" says Mansfield.

Despite having cancer, that humor I was telling you about, hasn't gone anywhere.
From how his taste of music has changed since being diagnosed with cancer, to all details that colon cancer involves

"I haven't been willing to eat princes hot chicken yet" laughs Mansfield.

he takes his readers on this new and very personal journey.

"I
want people to get an entertaining story out of this.Keeps me from
getting too worried or too excited about day to day stuff" Mansfield
says.

His cancer journey started earlier this year. During Idol Mansfield started feeling sick.
He postponed a suggested colonoscopy until after the Idol season.
Then in June he went in for the procedure.

"I was just coming out of sedation when I heard the doctor say, you have cancer" he says.

Instead of being frightened Mansfield says he was perplexed.
At only 48 and no immediate family history - how could this be?
Come to find out, Brian is one of only 2 to 3 percent of colon cancer patients with something called Lynch Syndrome.

"That
is a genetic disorder that comes with predisposition toward cancer to
the point someone with it has an 80 percent chance of getting colon
cancer by 70 and usually shows up in mid to late 40's in guy" explains
Mansfield .

That diagnosis  is why he is being  rolled in an endoscopy procedure room.

"The
scope is size of pinky and we put it in esophagus and stomach and look
for anything that shouldn't be there" says Dr. David McMillen.

Lynch Syndrome makes Mansfield at a higher risk for other cancers, such
as  stomach cancer, which is what they are checking for with this scope

I am looking up at esophagus and stomach coming together and everything
looks healthy normal. No evidence of cancer in upper track" says Dr.
McMillen.

Good news for Mansfield, but he jokes that it's not such good news, for his story!

:If
something really really bad happens it's great for the story if
something good happens medically then my second thought after, that is
great, is well, I'm not gonna have anything to write about" laughs
Mansfield

Tishomingo County voters OK beer, alcohol sales
May 22, 2013 23:38 GMT

IUKA, Miss. (AP) -- Tishomingo County is the latest Mississippi jurisdiction to legalize alcohol sales.

Voters approved the sale of liquor, wine and beer Tuesday, reports the Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal (http://bit.ly/13JCcix).

It wasn't clear referendums would pass until affidavit ballots were counted Wednesday.

With more than half Tishomingo County's voters casting ballots, legalizing alcohol passed by 42 votes, while legalizing beer and light wine passed by 73. The county borders Alabama and Tennessee.

Lawmakers legalized liquor at a proposed resort at the county's Bay Springs Lake in 2010, but it wasn't built.

Greene County voters legalized beer sales last year, while Corinth, New Albany and Senatobia have legalized alcohol sales under a 2012 law that allows cities to hold votes.

Mississippi has 13 remaining counties that allow no beer or alcohol sales.
