Police say officers assigned to Hunters Lane High School this morning arrested 3 men for carrying a loaded handgun on school property. Anthony Pirtle, 22, Christopher L. Williams, 20, and Jamarin Coates, 20, were stopped trying to enter the school just before 11 a.m. A short time later, police say a student apparently let them in through a side door. The three were immediately stopped by an assistant principle and taken to an office to be prosecuted for trespassing. During that process, School Resource officers recovered the weapon from a backpack one of the men was carrying. Officials say they claimed that they were at the school to meet a friend over the lunch hour and that they were unaware the gun was in the backpack, and said they had picked up the backpack to “blend in”. Pirtle and Coates are charged with carrying a gun on school property and criminal trespassing. Williams is charged with felon in possession of a weapon, carrying a gun on school property and criminal trespassing.

Miss. chooses new firm to run Woodville prison

WOODVILLE, Miss. (AP) -- Mississippi officials have picked a new company to run the Wilkinson County Correctional Facility.
Utah-based Management and Training Corp. announced Friday that the Mississippi Department of Corrections has chosen it to run the 1,000-bed prison starting July 1, the Natchez Democrat reports (http://bit.ly/10MvOGv).
Corrections Corporation of America, based in Nashville, Tenn., had run the prison since 1998. MTC says it will keep "the vast majority" of employees.
MTC will get a five-year contract to run the prison with two one-year options. Last year, officials chose MTC to take over East Mississippi Correctional Facility, the Walnut Grove Correctional Facility and the Marshall County Correctional Facility from the GEO Group. MTC won 10-year contracts for each.
CCA still runs the Tallahatchie County Correctional Facility and the Adams County Correctional Center in Mississippi.
