The death of an MTSU freshman , possibly from bacterial meningitis, is bringing new attention to the meningitis vaccine.
The vaccine is highly recommended for college students, but it is not required.
Some believe it may be time to change the rules.
MTSU's Health Services continues to hand out doses of Cipro after 18 year old Jacob Nunley's death.
It's believed the college freshman died of bacterial meningitis.
Students who had close contact with him are being urged to get the antibiotic.
"I'm really hoping that people will just be smart and take their medications, and it won't go any further than that," says MTSU student Cassie Warren.
Many here are now talking about prevention.
A meningitis vaccine is available, but it's not required in Tennessee.
"In a college setting you're around lots and lots of people. You don't know who has gotten the vaccine, who doesn't., who has meningitis, who doesn't," says MTSU student Amy Perry.
MTSU's Medical Director recommends the injection, but it would take a change in state law to make it a requirement.
"This is an important one for college students, so that one and Hepatitis B would be two that you would want to at least think about that issue," says MTSU Medical Director Dr. Eric Clark.
The Tennessee Department of Health follows the current CDC recommendations, which do not mandate the vaccination.
Still, Dr. Lori MacDonald highly encourages patients to get it.
"It's one of those things that you are not going to see a lot of, but when you do see it, you wished you hadn't,"
Some students have already been vaccinated. They hope others will too.
"I think that everyone should be required to get it. If you're required to get chicken pox to come here, why not another one just to keep you safe and healthy," says MTSU student Lindsey Pierce.
Right now about 500 students have received the preventative antibiotics at Health Services.
There is also vaccine in stock at MTSU just in case students want a long-term solution.
The meningitis vaccine is not required in the state of Kentucky either, however, some states, like Texas, require all college students to be vaccinated.

Miss. chooses new firm to run Woodville prison

WOODVILLE, Miss. (AP) -- Mississippi officials have picked a new company to run the Wilkinson County Correctional Facility.
Utah-based Management and Training Corp. announced Friday that the Mississippi Department of Corrections has chosen it to run the 1,000-bed prison starting July 1, the Natchez Democrat reports (http://bit.ly/10MvOGv).
Corrections Corporation of America, based in Nashville, Tenn., had run the prison since 1998. MTC says it will keep "the vast majority" of employees.
MTC will get a five-year contract to run the prison with two one-year options. Last year, officials chose MTC to take over East Mississippi Correctional Facility, the Walnut Grove Correctional Facility and the Marshall County Correctional Facility from the GEO Group. MTC won 10-year contracts for each.
CCA still runs the Tallahatchie County Correctional Facility and the Adams County Correctional Center in Mississippi.
