WBFF Fox 45 :: Issue of Electronic Ballot Books Creates Heated Conversation Among Council Members
A heated meeting of the Metro Council. Explosive charges as one council member says he still believes it's possible someone tried to rig the August Primary. Jerry Maynard says he remains bothered by what he says were 100 Democratic voters who received Republican ballots in August. This all came during a vote to pay for electronic poll books that are at the heart of this controversy. Maynard made some strong comments questioning whether the mistake was actually an attempt to influence the elections and that lead to some strong objections from other members. Council Member Tony Tenpenny is among those who took issue with Maynard's suggestion. The ballot mistake has been traced to a default setting in the machines, but Council Member Maynard says he still has questions whether the company specifically rigged the machines to set that default to a Republican ballot. He says the entire issue is something to be concerned about.

"I believe I would not have as much heartburn over this matter if we did not have election commissioners contributing to candidates in Davidson County," says Maynard.

"We have logical explanations for everything that occurred here and to imply there are improprieties or direct attempts to influence elections is false and inappropriate to be said," says Council Member Charlie Tygard.

Despite the banter, the council did approve the $400,000 to buy the poll books. Election officials have said this won't be a problem again and they are continuing to look into what happened.

Haslam's chief deputy Claude Ramsey to retire
June 19, 2013 16:41 GMT

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- Gov. Bill Haslam says chief deputy Claude Ramsey is retiring at the end of August to spend more time with his family in Chattanooga.

The Republican governor said in a news release on Wednesday that the 70-year-old Ramsey has been integral to his administration on key initiatives that include civil service reform, economic development efforts, workforce development training and improved operation of state government.

Ramsey was elected to the General Assembly in 1972 where he served four years in the House. He was Hamilton County's mayor for 16 years.

His last day on the job is August 31.
