According to an article in the Chicago Tribune (http://tinyurl.com/96kwksz), the alderman who made national headlines during the summer for opposing a Chick-fil-A in his increasingly trendy Northwest Side ward has reversed course, saying he will let the fast-food chain open a store in Logan Square.
The article claims Ald. Proco "Joe" Moreno, 1st, said the restaurant has agreed to include a statement of respect for all sexual orientations in an internal document and promised that its not-for-profit arm would not contribute money to groups that oppose gay marriage.
A nationwide protest of Chick-Fil-A's stance on traditional marriage didn't go well in the Midstate. Back in August, same sex couples and supporters were supposed to kiss in or outside the restaurant. The places we stopped by didn't see any action. That wasn't the case elsewhere. Plenty of protestors turned out in other parts of the country, especially in Atlanta. Gay rights activists celebrated Kiss Day at Chick-Fil-A restaurants. The nationwide campaign fell on the heels of remarks from the restaurant's President, Dan Cathy, saying he supports the Bible's definition of a family unit, which was generally interpreted as a stance against same-sex marriage. Organizers called on same-sex couples to take part in Kiss Day, and post their pictures online. Gay and lesbian activists took to the streets in the Atlanta area to send their message loud and clear. In California, some people found another way to express their distaste for the chicken chain's President. Someone painted "Tastes Like Hate" on a Chick-Fil-A restaurant in Torrance. "Kiss Day" marked the 2nd nationwide campaign centered around the fast-food restaurant. Earlier in that same week, customers held a "Chick-Fil-A Appreciation Day" to show support of Chick-Fil-A. The company said it set a sales record. Chick-Fil-A released a statement, saying they appreciate their customers and will serve them anytime. House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi responded to claims she supports the protest after remarks she made on Twitter.
"What I tweeted was 'I'm a Kentucky Fried Chicken fan'," says Pelosi (D-Calif.). "That's where my loyalty lies, but I'm here to talk about tax policy of the United States of America. Avoiding a budget, cliff and the rest of that I'll leave the local matters to our locality."

TBI: Women more likely family violence victims

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- A new study of domestic violence in Tennessee last year found women were nearly two times more likely to be victimized than men and children were the victims in 16 percent of all family violence cases.
The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation put out a report this week analyzing crime statistics from law enforcement agencies across the state. Their findings show that nearly 15 percent of all crimes reported were domestic in nature.
The study looked at the relationships between victims and offenders as well as the influence of drugs and alcohol on family violence. The study found that more than 17 percent of family violence involves drugs or alcohol, with alcohol being the most common.
