WBFF Fox 45 :: Williamson Co. School Deals with Several Cases of Viral Meningitis
Several students at a Williamson County school are being treated for Viral Meningitis. All of the affected students attend Oakview Elementary in Franklin. Up to 7 suspected cases of Viral Meningitis have been reported to the school within the last 2 weeks. Oakview officials say they're keeping parents updated with the situation. So far, they have sent out 2 newsletters, and they have scrubbed the school.

"We've taken all the proactive steps we can think of to avoid the spread of any kind of virus," says School Superintendent Dr. Mike Looney. "Whether it's that specific virus or not, we want our kids to be healthy at school."

School officials say the campus has been thoroughly deep cleaned. There are several forms of Meningitis including Bacterial, Viral, Fungal, Parasitic, Neonatal and Amoebic just to name a few. How they are contracted and who they generally affect vary widely. The 2 most common forms of the disease are Viral and Bacterial. The Viral type usually affects babies and kids, and patients usually make a full recovery. Bacterial Meningitis, on the other hand, needs urgent medical attention. Many people who get it are left with a variety of after affects, and 1 in 10 patients die. Yesterday we told you about the Fungal Meningitis cases. Those patients got it during an epidural steroid injection for back pain. It's a much rarer form. FOX17 will continue to follow all these cases and bring you updates as we get them.

May 22, 2013 13:32 GMT

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (AP) -- Washington County authorities say a man faked a marriage certificate so he could visit a woman held in the Johnson City Detention Facility.

The Johnson City Press (http://bit.ly/14QBr9L ) reports investigators discovered the ruse after the May 14 visit by 32-year-old Robert S. Hicks of Elizabethton. Hicks was arrested Tuesday on a charge of criminal simulation. He was jailed at the Washington County Detention Center in lieu of $10,000 bond, pending a court appearance Wednesday.
