"It's a fun thing to do in Fall weather in Nashville," says Tiffiney Smith. "I am also hosting a chili contest at Bell Middle School on October 26, so I came out to see how the professionals do it."
Most of those professionals were members of organizations that benefit from the non-profit group Community Shares, like the Middle Tennessee Counsel for the Blind.
"There is not much we can't do," says MTCB's Peggy Ivie. "We want to be active and show people that we are productive, independent and empowered."
Community Shares is a group of 47 Tennessee-based organizations who have come together to raise money cooperatively for their programs.
"A lot of our groups are all volunteer organizations or they have a small budget," says Shares' Tracey Hawk. "So, they don't have a lot of money to go into workplace giving campaigns."
While this is a fierce competition, there turned out to be several winners: those underfunded organizations that benefit from Community Shares. While a good bowl of chili may not sound like a difficult task, when you are blind or vision impaired, there are a few more steps involved. The Middle Tennessee Counsel for the Blind made their special chili with what they call "sighted helpers".
"You learn to adapt," says Ivie. "You have tools that enable you. I have some finger guards that will slip on if you are cutting."
They hope the extra love, work, care and concern that went into making their chili will help them win the competition this year. Organizers say anywhere from 300-400 people showed up Sunday to enjoy the Nashville Chili Festival.

Miss. chooses new firm to run Woodville prison
May 18, 2013 20:50 GMT
WOODVILLE, Miss. (AP) -- Mississippi officials have picked a new company to run the Wilkinson County Correctional Facility.
Utah-based Management and Training Corp. announced Friday that the Mississippi Department of Corrections has chosen it to run the 1,000-bed prison starting July 1, the Natchez Democrat reports (http://bit.ly/10MvOGv).
Corrections Corporation of America, based in Nashville, Tenn., had run the prison since 1998. MTC says it will keep "the vast majority" of employees.
MTC will get a five-year contract to run the prison with two one-year options. Last year, officials chose MTC to take over East Mississippi Correctional Facility, the Walnut Grove Correctional Facility and the Marshall County Correctional Facility from the GEO Group. MTC won 10-year contracts for each.
CCA still runs the Tallahatchie County Correctional Facility and the Adams County Correctional Center in Mississippi.
