WBFF Fox 45 :: 4 Midstate Officers Shot in the Last Decade
Shootings like this one remind us just how often our officers risk their own lives protecting the rest of us. In the last decade, we've had 4 Midstate officers shot. Only 3 of them lived to see justice served. 10 years after the fact, the video is just as chilling as it was in May 2002. Former Brentwood Officer Stephanie Warner is in a shootout with a bank robber armed with an assault rifle.

"I dove out of my car and did not put the car in park, and thank God," says Warner. "Had I done so, I would not be here today."

Her moving cop car provides the only shield to Gary Brown's barrage of bullets. Fellow Brentwood officers took his life before he took hers. 4 short years later, Metro Officer Danita Marsh was shot while answering a domestic call in North Nashville. Willie Lee Lindsey finally surrendered. Metro Police and area businesses donated a handicapped accessible home to Officer Marsh, who's paralyzed from the waist down.

"Thank you to those officers who still come by the house with a tomato plant, cookies or just listen to me rant about this wheelchair," says Officer Marsh.

Sgt. Mark Chestnut was the next Midstate casualty. In September 2009, 2 escaped inmates from Mississippi fired on Sgt. Chestnut 4 times.

"I would especially like to thank the nurses and doctors at Vanderbilt Hospital," says Sgt. Chestnut.

The fatal blow came in June 2011. Deputy Keith Bellar, a young father and a man heavily involved in church mission work, was shot in the head by Jayson Eggenberg during a domestic call. Eggenburg then killed himself.

"Keith very well likely took bullets that were intended for the gunman's wife, so laying down your life for another human being is the true definition of a hero," says friend Kyle Sanders.

Miss. chooses new firm to run Woodville prison
May 18, 2013 20:50 GMT

WOODVILLE, Miss. (AP) -- Mississippi officials have picked a new company to run the Wilkinson County Correctional Facility.

Utah-based Management and Training Corp. announced Friday that the Mississippi Department of Corrections has chosen it to run the 1,000-bed prison starting July 1, the Natchez Democrat reports (http://bit.ly/10MvOGv).

Corrections Corporation of America, based in Nashville, Tenn., had run the prison since 1998. MTC says it will keep "the vast majority" of employees.

MTC will get a five-year contract to run the prison with two one-year options. Last year, officials chose MTC to take over East Mississippi Correctional Facility, the Walnut Grove Correctional Facility and the Marshall County Correctional Facility from the GEO Group. MTC won 10-year contracts for each.

CCA still runs the Tallahatchie County Correctional Facility and the Adams County Correctional Center in Mississippi.
