The state Republican Party makes one change in its leadership. In its caucus meeting, State Representative Curtis Johnson beat out previous Speaker Pro Tem Judd Matheny for the #2 position in the House. Republican leaders return to session next year with a larger majority to tackle goals like making Tennessee more business friendly.
"In 2 years we've brought us to be the 5gh most business-friendly state in the Union and we wanna make that 1st, and so that's one of our goals, to make us even more business friendly," says State Representative Glen Casada.
Republicans also nominated House Speaker Beth Harwell for another term. Both Harwell and Johnson's positions are voted on by the full House, but they're expected to win easily because Republicans have a large majority.

Haslam's chief deputy Claude Ramsey to retire

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- Gov. Bill Haslam says chief deputy Claude Ramsey is retiring at the end of August to spend more time with his family in Chattanooga.
The Republican governor said in a news release on Wednesday that the 70-year-old Ramsey has been integral to his administration on key initiatives that include civil service reform, economic development efforts, workforce development training and improved operation of state government.
Ramsey was elected to the General Assembly in 1972 where he served four years in the House. He was Hamilton County's mayor for 16 years.
His last day on the job is August 31.
