The Connecticut school shooting has parents and community members asking a lot of questions. Among those, what if something like that happened here in the mid-state? Are our local hospitals prepared to handle an incident with mass causalities? Southern Hills Medical Center tells Fox 17 News the run drills at least twice a year. They cover everything from explosions, plane crashes, chemical spills, mass shootings and everything in between. Southern Hills says the triage systems are set up to take the most critical patients first.
“We do communicate back and forth to let them know what is going on in the city. We have regional hospital coordinator that also helps to get that message out to the other facilities,” said Disaster Coordinator Kathy Swalls.

Updated conservatorship statute effective July 1

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- Gov. Bill Haslam has signed into law revisions to the state conservatorship statute.
The law allows the court to appoint a conservator to manage the assets of a person a judge finds unable to handle his or her own affairs.
State Rep. Andrew Farmer, a Sevierville Republican, told The Tennessean (http://tnne.ws/1183hjy ) the intent of the bill he sponsored in the House is to make sure people aren't being taken advantage of.
The bill sprang from a series of hearings statewide by the Tennessee Bar Association. They revealed there were no uniform procedures for placing a person's assets under a conservator on an emergency basis.
The changes take effect July 1.
