WBFF Fox 45 :: Battle of the Bands Sets Stage for Music City Bowl - Eric Alvarez
The Vanderbilt and NC State marching bands clashed in the annual Battle of the Bands on Broadway Saturday night.

The tradition has been a fan favorite ever since the very first Music City Bowl in 1998.  It's where the gauntlet is thrown and the stage is set for Monday's game.

Thousands of fans supported their school turning Broadway into a sea of fans divided into red and white, and black and gold factions, and each school brought their best to get the fans geared up.

Vanderbilt's biggest moment came when the twirlers lit the ends of their batons on fire and threw them into the air.

NC State answered by firing a cannon during the team's fight song.
The performances naturally left fans split on who they thought won.

"Vanderbilt of course because this is our house," said Mika Wells, a Vanderbilt alumna.  "Why wouldn't we win?"

"Of course I'm going to say NC State won but we truly were the better band," said Patty Clapper, NC State fan.

"I believe Vanderbilt won because of the energy of the crowd it was a lot of fun," Mackenzie Brannan said.

Bowl officials said they'd already sold some 55,000 tickets as of Sunday night for the 11:00 a.m. game Monday at LP Field.

Man pleads guilty to Memphis officer's murder
May 21, 2013 22:22 GMT

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) -- A former death row inmate is set to be released from prison after he pleaded guilty to second-degree murder of a Memphis police officer.

Shelby County District Attorney Amy Weirich said Tuesday that she has accepted Timothy McKinney's guilty plea.

McKinney was convicted of first-degree murder for the fatal shooting of Officer Don Williams. The officer was killed outside a comedy club in December 1997.

McKinney appealed and won a new trial, which ended with a deadlocked jury. A third trial earlier this year also ended in a hung jury.

The Commercial Appeal reports that McKinney was sentenced to 15 years in prison. Since he's already served more than 15 years -- including 11 on death row -- McKinney will be released this week.

Williams' family opposed the settlement.
