got him on the phone and said Mr. President what do you want to hear. He
did not hesitate. Elvira came out his mouth immediately and we sang it"
says band member Richard Sterman.
The speaker phone concert
from Nashville to Texas certainly wasn't the first time the Oak Ridge
Boys have performed for our Nations 41st President. The Oaks met Bush
years ago when they were invited to sing at a congressional bbq when
Bush was VP under Ronald Reagan. Band member Richard Sterban says they
will never forget President Bush walking up to them at sound check and
telling them he was a big fan!
He said I can't make the concert,
will you be kind enough to sing a couple songs for us? We said of
course, what would you like to hear? He started naming songs and I think
it's then we realized he was a true fan because he mentioned songs that
were not hits" remembers Sterban.
The Oak Ridge boys ended up going on the campaign trail with Bush twice annd over the past 30 years have become dear friends.
"We
have had a special friendship with George and Barbara, spent almost
every summer at their place, had a wonderful time and wonderful
relationship" says Sterban.
The former President has been hospitalized in Houston for over a month.
Initially
for bronchitis and a lingering cough. President Bush was in ICU when
his wife Barbara called upon the country group requesting their musical
healing. The very next day bush was released from ICU and put in a
regular room.
"We have always felt music is healing and in this case it certainly was. Our singing gave him a real boost" says Sterban.
In addition to Elvira, the Oak Ridge Boys also sang Mr. Bush's favorite song, Amazing Grace.
The Bush family says says the performance certainly gave the former President a real shot in the arm!
As of today his media rep tells us that while still hospitalized, he continues to do well.
