WBFF Fox 45 :: Allegations of Animal Abuse, Neglect in Rutherford Co.
Animal Control officers are being accused of failing to rescue neglected animals in time. Tonight one dog is dead and several others are missing. Rutherford County Animal Control officers say they can't comment on the ongoing investigation, but Eagleville residents say officers should have acted sooner. On Tuesday, Animal Control taped a note to the door of a home citing Tim Hazelwood for Animal Cruelty. They found a beagle near death and 3 other dogs severely neglected. When they returned Wednesday the dogs were gone. Neighbors who didn't want to be identified say they had complained for months and officers waited too late to act.

"I know it's the owner's responsibility, but if you keep calling animal control and they don't want to do nothing either, it's just as much their fault as the owner," says a neighbor.

Records show Animal Control had been investigating animal neglect problems on the property since early December, and the dogs were getting progressively worse. Officials believe Tim Hazelwood may have taken the dogs to a relative's home in Williamson County. Rutherford County Mayor Earnest Burgess says he's spoken with Animal Control and is confident the owner will be held accountable.

Tishomingo County voters OK beer, alcohol sales
May 22, 2013 23:38 GMT

IUKA, Miss. (AP) -- Tishomingo County is the latest Mississippi jurisdiction to legalize alcohol sales.

Voters approved the sale of liquor, wine and beer Tuesday, reports the Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal (http://bit.ly/13JCcix).

It wasn't clear referendums would pass until affidavit ballots were counted Wednesday.

With more than half Tishomingo County's voters casting ballots, legalizing alcohol passed by 42 votes, while legalizing beer and light wine passed by 73. The county borders Alabama and Tennessee.

Lawmakers legalized liquor at a proposed resort at the county's Bay Springs Lake in 2010, but it wasn't built.

Greene County voters legalized beer sales last year, while Corinth, New Albany and Senatobia have legalized alcohol sales under a 2012 law that allows cities to hold votes.

Mississippi has 13 remaining counties that allow no beer or alcohol sales.
