WBFF Fox 45 :: Dropping Temperatures Could be Dangerous
NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Whether indoors or out, you could be at risk for hypothermia or frost bite. I'm told the degree of temperature isn't as significant as the length of exposure. Tonight, we're trying to keep it to a minimum. Dr. Les Lenning at TriStar Summit Medical Center says he sees patients often in the winter months, especially children and the elderly, with frost bite or hypothermia. Hypothermia is caused by a cooling of your core body temperature, and frost bite occurs to the extremities, where there's less blood. Often time with frost bite, you don't realize the problem until you warm up again and experience the pain.

"We see it fairly frequently," says Dr. Lenning. "People often don't realize that they've lost as much heat as they have and they end up coming in because they're having pain in their extremities."

Dr. Letting says the nose, fingers and ears are the most common frostbitten parts of the body. To avoid an issue, keep your head and any exposed skin covered. Don't drink alcohol. 2 appellate court judges are stepping down
May 24, 2013 21:29 GMT

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- Two Tennessee appellate court judges have notified Gov. Bill Haslam that they will not run for another term on the bench in the August 2014 retention election.

Patricia J. Cottrell, a judge on the Court of Appeals, and Joseph M. Tipton, who sits on the Court of Criminal Appeals bench, will both leave after September of next year.

The announcements come after the state legislature left Tennessee without a way to replace judges who step down or die when a commission expires at the end of next month.

Members of the soon-to-be-defunct Judicial Nominating Commission will make recommendations for replacements to give to Haslam before the panel expires. Haslam will appoint the replacements from those recommendations.
