WBFF Fox 45 :: Changes on the Battlefield Bring New Role for Women in Uniform
MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Tenn. - The U.S. Military is about to make another controversial change. In one of his last acts as Defense Secretary, Leon Panetta is preparing to remove restrictions on women in combat.

Montgomery County Deputy Lisa Howell is among those who think it's a change that's been needed for a long time.

"We have women in political positions of power.  Women in power positions across the private sector of industry so why shouldn't women be wherever else they want to be," said Howell.

Howell served in the Army in Operation Desert Storm in the 90s driving heavy vehicles.

She always wanted to drive a tank, but that job was prohibited.

Still other women, like soldier's wife Jessica Tate, see it the other way.

She worries about how men might react when they see women under fire.

"Guys have this natural reaction to help a female," says Tate.  "You do that overseas you might be leaving someone that you're not supposed to be leaving to defend a girl."

"I never did understand why women weren't allowed the same opportunities as everybody else," says Army Veteran Lisa Howell. "Last time I checked there's no division in sexes throughout other employment issues."

This decision could open up over 230,000 jobs to women.

It remains to be seen if it will allow women to serve in Special Ops Forces like the Rangers. Changes on the Battlefield Bring New Role for Women in Uniform

Haslam's chief deputy Claude Ramsey to retire
June 19, 2013 16:41 GMT

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- Gov. Bill Haslam says chief deputy Claude Ramsey is retiring at the end of August to spend more time with his family in Chattanooga.

The Republican governor said in a news release on Wednesday that the 70-year-old Ramsey has been integral to his administration on key initiatives that include civil service reform, economic development efforts, workforce development training and improved operation of state government.

Ramsey was elected to the General Assembly in 1972 where he served four years in the House. He was Hamilton County's mayor for 16 years.

His last day on the job is August 31.
