WBFF Fox 45 :: Sen. Alexander Asks to Delay Fishing Restrictions

U.S. Senator Lamar Alexander of Tennessee is asking the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for a seven month delay on fishing restrictions on the Cumberland River following the sequester cuts.

Alexander says the cut of $255 million the Corps faces in the sequester's automatic spending cuts justifies further consideration of the restrictions and the exploration of alternatives with state agencies.

"Before the sequester, there were more important priorities than restricting fishing in waters when they aren't hazardous.  And after the sequester that's even truer" Alexander said.

The Corps has proposed restricting public access to fishing waters citing safety concerns saying there have been 14 fatalities at or around dams along the Cumberland River since 1970.  Three of those have occured since 2009.

Alexander says right now is not the time to restrict access. "Men and women from all over America have been fishing these waters for generations.  To put an abrupt stop to this on public lands is unreasonable" Alexander said.

Rebar finishing will add 40 jobs in Knox County
May 21, 2013 11:13 GMT

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- Another 40 jobs are coming to Knox County as Gerdau (gair-DOW') expands its steel reinforcement bar plant.

The Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development says the new facility will apply finishing services to rebar now made at the company's Lonsdale mill.

TDEC Commissioner Bill Hagerty and Gerdau officials announced the expansion on Monday, saying the plant will have the capacity to finish about 120,000 tons of steel per year.

Knox County Mayor Tim Burchett said it was good to see a vacant building in the WestBridge Business Park be put back into industrial use.
