WBFF Fox 45 :: Future of Workers' Compensation in Tenn. is Hot Topic on the Hill
NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Reforming the worker's compensation system is one of Governor Haslam's legislative priorities. As it stands, workers' comp is handled by the Labor Department and the court system. A new bill would consolidate it into a single, state-run agency with an administrator appointed by the Governor.

"We want what is best for Tennessee, we want what is best for Tennesseans working in the work place and what is best for employers who want to build business," says bill sponsor Rep. Kevin Brooks (R-Cleveland).

"The outline of it sounds really good, but the bottom dollar of it underneath is not good at all," says factory employee Regina Layton.

Tennessee and Alabama are the only 2 states in the country where workers' compensation claims go through the courts.

Federal judge dismisses charter school suit
May 22, 2013 22:10 GMT

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- A federal judge has dismissed a lawsuit against the Metro Nashville Board of Education brought by a charter school that was ordered to be closed because of poor student performance.

The Metro School Board voted in November to shut down Smithson Craighead Middle School because the charter school ranked among the worst academic performers in the state and was losing enrollment.

Afterward, the school and parents filed a class action lawsuit against the board of education arguing that the board violated their due process and equal protection rights.

On Wednesday, U.S. District Judge Kevin Sharp dismissed the lawsuit, rejecting the parents' claim that they would be forced to send their children to inferior schools and denying that the charter's rights were violated.
