WBFF Fox 45 :: Elementary School Student Gives the Gift of Friendship
Two elementary students in La Vergne with different learning levels and social skills are teaching others the "real" meaning of friendship. Fox 17's Erika Kurre shows us how their lesson has become contagious setting an example for others beyond their school.

Timothy and Maddie have chosen each other as best friends.
"I just think kids should know that you should never judge a book by its cover," says Maddie Smith.

10-year-old Maddie Smith practices what she preaches. The typical 4th grader reached out to Timothy Britt knowing he needed a friend.

"It's just one of those times where it brings you to tears because you wonder if your child will have a friend when they're autistic," said Timothy’s mother Cari Britt.

Cari Britt says along with autism, her son lives with mild Cerebral Palsey. He was born five weeks early and has had five major surgeries in his 10 years. Social interactions are a challenge for him except with Maddie. She walks with him to class and they read books together.

Timothy's teacher, Andrea Martz says the interaction between the two has become contagious.

His personality is one of Maddie's favorite characteristics.

"I'm glad that she got to see that and now she's showing that to other people because they see her really caring about him and then they want to do the same thing,” says Andrea Martz.Elementary School Student Gives the Gift of Friendship

Miss. chooses new firm to run Woodville prison
May 18, 2013 20:50 GMT

WOODVILLE, Miss. (AP) -- Mississippi officials have picked a new company to run the Wilkinson County Correctional Facility.

Utah-based Management and Training Corp. announced Friday that the Mississippi Department of Corrections has chosen it to run the 1,000-bed prison starting July 1, the Natchez Democrat reports (http://bit.ly/10MvOGv).

Corrections Corporation of America, based in Nashville, Tenn., had run the prison since 1998. MTC says it will keep "the vast majority" of employees.

MTC will get a five-year contract to run the prison with two one-year options. Last year, officials chose MTC to take over East Mississippi Correctional Facility, the Walnut Grove Correctional Facility and the Marshall County Correctional Facility from the GEO Group. MTC won 10-year contracts for each.

CCA still runs the Tallahatchie County Correctional Facility and the Adams County Correctional Center in Mississippi.
