WBFF Fox 45 :: VOTE 2012-Photo Library Cards Accepted Election Day

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) -- The Tennessee Supreme Court will take up the challenge to the state's voter identification law and has ordered election officials to accept Memphis photo library cards at the polls.

The Supreme Court on Thursday ordered Secretary of State Tre Hargett and state Elections Coordinator Mark Goins to advise the Shelby County Election Commission to accept the library IDs for Tuesday's election.

Hargett and Goins had appealed a Court of Appeals decision that ruled the library cards were government-issued photo IDs.

When the appeal request was filed, the election officials made those who showed the library card during early voting cast a provisional ballot, which might not be counted on Election Day.

Thursday is the last day of early voting for the general election.

Houston brother will be his own attorney in court
June 18, 2013 13:02 GMT

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- A Roane County man will face federal gun violation charges next month without an attorney.

The Knoxville News Sentinel (http://bit.ly/17VlXpM ) reported Rocky Joe Houston will represent himself on a charge of possession of a gun by a felon.

The charge came after Houston earlier represented himself in state court on charges stemming from a police chase. He was convicted of evading arrest and reckless endangerment.

Houston and his brother, Leon Houston, were tried, but not convicted, in the 2006 shooting deaths of a Roane County deputy and his ride-along companion.

In federal court, Rocky Joe Houston is claiming the officer who charged him with the felony had no legal authority.
