WASHINGTON, D.C. - Some of the hardest hit areas will not get relief in the wake of Hurricane Sandy. The $50 billion emergency aid package House members passed this week will collect dust before a large share of it's spent. Our investigative partners, The Washington Guardian, found pork galore in the 110 page bill, which still needs Senate approval. $10 million is earmarked for the FBI, nearly $90 million is headed to Amtrak and the Interior Department's Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement will have about $3 million to spend on oil spill research. About 2/3 of the so-called "emergency money", according to the Congressional Budget Office, won't be spent until 2015.
"That raises a real question: Was it really an emergency spending bill in its entirety or was it an excuse for federal agencies to find a lot of money for things that weren't in their normal budget?" says The Washington Guardian's John Solomon.

2 appellate court judges are stepping down

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- Two Tennessee appellate court judges have notified Gov. Bill Haslam that they will not run for another term on the bench in the August 2014 retention election.
Patricia J. Cottrell, a judge on the Court of Appeals, and Joseph M. Tipton, who sits on the Court of Criminal Appeals bench, will both leave after September of next year.
The announcements come after the state legislature left Tennessee without a way to replace judges who step down or die when a commission expires at the end of next month.
Members of the soon-to-be-defunct Judicial Nominating Commission will make recommendations for replacements to give to Haslam before the panel expires. Haslam will appoint the replacements from those recommendations.
