National Guard Members Deploy to Iraq-Sky Arnold
Thousands of members of the 278th Tennessee Army National Guard are spending some precious moments with their families.
They are about to leave for a year long security mission in Iraq.
Those soldiers have spent the last two months training in Camp Shelby, Mississippi.
Some 3,300 soldiers are deploying to Iraq and they won't be home until December. Sgt. Christopher Kain is among the soldiers leaving for a security mission in Iraq. It's his second deployment.
Sgt. Christopher Kain says, "Last time it was ok cause I was single and didn't have any family. This time it was a lot different response I was upset at first but it's what we do."
His pregnant wife Kristi and daughter won't see him again until December. His wife, Kristi Kain, says "All prayer...we'll get through it we're strong."
The guard is holding a sendoff ceremony at Camp Shelby to give families a chance to say goodbye. Jessica Humes, who is married to one of the soldiers, says, "I'm really scared he doesn't want to talk about it a lot we're praying everything be ok he comes home safe."
Humes isn't the only wife who's nervous about the deployment, and a nearby memorial is one reason why. It's dedicated in honor of the 14 soldiers, like Kim Tucker's son Wesley, who didn't return from the 278th's last deployment. Kim Tucker says, "Very emotional and very proud...his memory is gonna stay alive."
About 300 soldiers from the 278th are already in Iraq getting everything ready for the rest of the men and women who will begin flying out Saturday. National Guard Members Deploy to Iraq-Sky Arnold
