Animal Control in Wilson County
Nancy Andrews loves riding her bicycle, but in Wilson county, it's not always the safest way to exercise. Nancy Andrews says, "You can not go on a bike ride around Wilson county without getting chased by dogs."
Last August Andrews was attacked while biking past a home on Posey Hill Road.
Andrews says, "The dog started running beside the bike and when I yelled at him to get away, he actually bit me three times."
A few months and thirteen stitches later, Andrews is actively pushing for better animal control in Wilson county.
Right now, the county follows state law but critics say it doesn't have enough bite and she's questions why no one, not animal control, the Sheriff's department or even the health department has clear jurisdiction over cases like hers.
County commissioner, Heather Scott is taking on the challenge. She says shelters like new leash on life in Lebanon are full of animals found roaming through the county but people don't want to take them to animal control because those that are taken in, she says, are euthanized within a few days. Scott says, "In recent years, we've had a lot of growth coming into the county itself. With that growth comes more animals and either people dropping off their animals. We hear about more and more dog bites occurring."
Scott now heads up a committee that will study animal control concerns starting with dog bites in hopes of coming up with a solution that is of low cost, or no cost, to tax payers. That committee will hold a public hearing on Tuesday at 5:30pm at the Wilson County Courthouse.
