Outside the Nashville Rescue Mission, there is no better sound than the sizzle of deep fried turkeys. That's because with each bird, another family will have Thanksgiving dinner. The Mission hopes to serve over 5000 meals this week alone, and Tracy Lawrence and a slew of his celebrity friends are a big help. Raising money, collecting turkeys and frying about 500 of the 1000 birds they hope to serve throughout the entire holiday season.
"Sometimes it's just difficult to overcome hardships and this is a place people can come, get off the street and get their lives back on track," says Lawrence. "Very needed in our community."
You never know who you'll see in the parking lot, from country and bluegrass stars to American Idols and Tennessee Titans. Everyone's having a good time for a good cause.
"Every year we make sure we are here helping the needy and doing our little bit," says the Roys.
Lawrence has been hosting the Mission Possible Turkey Fry for 7 years now, bringing in close to 6000 turkeys and providing over 35,000 meals, helping those like George Blackburn. Blackburn is now a staff member at the Mission, but knows what it's like to need a helping hand. After this day's a wrap, the Mission says it's important to remember the need will continue every single day until these volunteers meet to fry turkeys again. The Mission will serve the turkeys from now until Friday. The donated money and frozen turkeys collected today will be used to feed the homeless all throughout the holiday season.
