Fantasy Football 2014: Baltimore Ravens

Joe Flacco, QB: Flacco followed up his Super Bowl season with a dreadful one in 2013. Now, there are new faces surrounding him and hope he could take the next step in fantasy land. He will still be a #2 quarterback to play only based on the matchups, but he could go from being a low-end #2 to a backup with serious upside. The addition of Steve Smith and re-signing of Jacoby Jones to go with Torrey Smith means Flacco will have his best wide receiving corps since the departure of Anquan Boldin. He'll be better than last year, but don't expect to lean on him until he takes that next step.

Steve Smith, WR: What's 5'9" has always had a chip on it's shoulder and is angry as hell? Steve Smith landed with the Ravens after being released by the Panthers following 13 seasons with the club. Upon signing, Smith told the Baltimore Sun "The part -- and the thing that's the most important -- is I found a home that seems to want me, and I wanted them."

Smith did see a significant drop in numbers last year compared to his 2011 & 2012 campaigns, but it was more a factor of his targets than a decline in talent. Smith only totaled 109 targets in 2013, his second-lowest total over the last eight years. It's no secret he can be tough to deal with at times and this was more a case of his relationships than his play. Even during a "down year," Smith totaled 98 fantasy points, good enough for 42nd among all wideouts. So why is his current ADP 54th at the position, 131st overall? He might be the #2 WR in Baltimore behind Torrey Smith, but Torrey is a burner, not known for his route running.

Steve offers Flacco a much-needed option in the mid-range game and his numbers should improve from last season. To put it in perspective, during Boldin's time opposite Torrey, Boldin had more targets (just barely) in each season. At worst, Steve Smith replicates last season and finishes with last season's total, but he will likely score more than 4 touchdowns with the Ravens, meaning he will outperform his current ADP. He will be one of the best wide receiver values you can get in 2014.

Torrey Smith, WR: With Jacoby Jones the only other threat in the passing game last season, Smith saw his touchdown total drop to four compared to 7 & 8 the previous two seasons. Now that Dennis Pitta is back and Steve Smith is here to keep secondaries honest, Torrey will bounce-back in his scoring production. That said, don't expect him to reproduce his 1,128 yard season last year. Smith notched 139 targets simply because Flacco had no other options. Even with all those targets, he still only came down with 65 of those passes and had only four scores to show for it.

There were 39 players in 2013 with 105 or more targets last season. Smith ranked 16th among them with his 139. Of the 23 players who had fewer targets, every one of them hauled in 65 or more balls. Bottom line, Smith won't be racking up the yardage like he did before and with Steve Smith and Dennis Pitta around, he's no lock to put up seven or more touchdowns. He's a decent buy with his current ADP of 63rd overall, but Steve Smith offers more bang for your buck. Torrey is still a good #3 WR option, but don't be surprised if he and Steve flip-flop in current production projections.

Dennis Pitta, TE: Former Texans head coach Gary Kubiak is now calling shots for this Ravens offense and he is a big proponent of using the tight end. While Owen Daniels did follow him to Baltimore, Dennis Pitta will be the biggest recipient of Kubiak's play-calling. The Ravens have shown two-tight end sets and run tight end screens in camp and preseason, so this is not just banter. More importantly, Pitta's 6'4" frame will be Flacco's biggest target on the team inside the 20s. Pitta is currently being drafted 9th among all tight ends behind guys like Jordan Reed, Jordan Cameron and Jason Witten, each of whom could see lesser production due to circumstances around them.

Ray Rice, RB: The two game suspension for Rice combined with his 27th 2013 point total among backs last year has Rice being drafted 25th among all backs. Simply stated, even with just 14 games to work with, Rice will still finish better than his current ADP. Keep in mind defenses focused on the Rutgers product last season. That was the key to stopping this offense. The team was also behind early and often, forcing Harbaugh to air it out and abandon the running game. Now, the Ravens are healthy and have added weapons. Rice's 3.1 yards per carry were far below his 4.3 career average last year and that won't happen again. Guys like Trent Richardson, Bishop Sankey, and Toby Gerhart are all being drafted ahead of Rice. That's fine, but make sure you're the one to wait on him and get an amazing deal.
