Titans All Access - WZTV FOX 17 - Fantasy Football Analysis 2014: Atlanta Falcons
Fantasy Football Analysis 2014: Atlanta Falcons
Matt Ryan, QB: Much is going to be made of Matt Ryan's performance last year which saw him finish 15th among fantasy quarterbacks. Rightfully so, but let's not forget Julio Jones only played five games before fracturing his foot and missing the rest of the season. Roddy White also missed several games for the first time in his career. In the five games where Ryan had both Jones and White, he passed for 300-plus yards in four of them and two touchdowns in every contest. He would only throw for multiple touchdowns in five of his next eleven games.

Ryan has been lucky to have two top receiving threats in the league and like most quarterbacks not named Manning, Brees or Brady, he's reliant on the talent around him. This season, Jones and White are back to full-health and expected to pick back up where they left off last year. With both his weapons back in the fold, don't expect Ryan to have another pedestrian year. Even with his struggles, he was only 12 fantasy points away from cracking the top ten at his position.

Julio Jones, WR: As stated, Jones suffered a major injury early last season but all indications are he will be back to his dominant self. Before exiting with injury, the Alabama product had four-straight games of 99 or more yards receiving (182 in Week 2) and two touchdowns. He also totaled no less than 11.6 fantasy points in those four weeks. There's a reason he's being drafted fifth among wide receivers in the middle of the second round in drafts. He will be Matt Ryan's primary target for as long as he can stay healthy.

Roddy White, WR: White is currently being taken in the 4th round of drafts as a number two wideout. The thing with White is there is validity in arguing that is both too high and possibly too low. For starters, he finished 54th among all wideouts with 87 fantasy points last season. His 711 yards and three scores were his worst statistical output since 2006. Sure, Julio Jones was hurt and teams were able to focus on the ten year veteran, but in the first five games when Jones was healthy, White totaled no more than 45 yards and failed to score.

On the flip-side, tight end Tony Gonzalez has moved on to an acting/analyst career. The eight touchdowns and 859 yards he amassed last season have to go to someone right? White is the likely candidate to see an increase in red-zone targets and should bounce back from a disappointing 2013 campaign, but as those first five games suggest, his glory days might be slipping away. 15th among all wideouts is just too high for my taste, especially with guys like Percy Harvin, DeSean Jackson, Jeremy Maclin and Mike Wallace all being number one threats on their respective teams but being drafted behind White.

Steven Jackson, RB: The Falcons thought Michael Turner wasn't worth the money, so they parted ways and brought in Jackson. He responded by totaling 115 fantasy points for the season, good for 31st among all running backs. Turner did miss four games with a hamstring injury last year, and if you had any hope for this season, forget it. The veteran tweaked his other hamstring in July and though he's expected to be ready for Week 1, he's been ruled out of camp indefinitely. Jacquizz Rodgers finished just 26 fantasy points behind Jackson last year despite having 42 fewer total touches. Add to that FSU rookie Devonta Freeman has impressed in camp and this is a backfield which could be splitting time three ways. Combined with Steven Jackson's recent rash of injuries, the veteran shouldn't be trusted as anything but a borderline #3 running back.
