Titans beat Packers in preseason opener, 20-16
Nashville, Tenn. (FOX 17) -- The Titans defense stood tall when the opportunity called.

Ri’Shard Anderson deflected a pass towards the end zone on 4th-and-one with 52 seconds left to seal a 20-16 victory over the Green Bay Packers in the Titans preseason home opener at LP Field Saturday night.

Jackie Battle scored the game winning 7-yard touchdown run with 5:02 remaining in the team’s debut of coach Ken Whisenhunt.
Matt Flynn started at quarterback for the Packers as Aaron Rodgers was scratched for the game.  Flynn completed five of 10 passes for 49 yards. Scott Tolzien threw for 124 yards on eight completions and James Starks led the Packers with 49 rushing yards and a touchdown.

In the pouring rain, the Packers had no trouble running the ball on the Titans defense. James Stark capped off an eight play drive with a 20 yard touchdown run to give Green Bay an early lead, 7-0, with 10:34 remaining in the first quarter.

On the Titans second drive, Jake Locker mishandled two snaps and the Packers muffed Brent Kern’s punt.  Zaviar Gooden recovered the ball at the Packers 13-yard line.  Shonn Greene scored on the next play to put the Titans on the board with 4:22 to play in the first quarter. Maikon Bonani missed the 33-yard extra point.

Jake Locker’s night didn’t go as the fourth year quarterback probably planned.  The former Washington Huskie completed one of only two passes for five yards to Justin Hunter. Shonn Greene had four carries for 20 yards that included the Titans only first quarter score.

Neither team could generate much offense in a torrential downpour during the second quarter.  Charlie Whitehurst completed seven of 10 passes for 60 yards and drove the Titans to within field goal range with a 23 yard pass to Bishop Sankey.  Whitehurst was sacked by Jarrett Bush for a seven yard loss to force a Kern punt before halftime.

“Well, conditions were pretty tough,” coach Ken Whisenhunt said at halftime.  “It’s something that we get a chance to look at and work on. We had some mistakes, but we had some good plays. We had some guys that made some plays.  I thought Daimion Stafford made some good plays out there on defense.”

Stafford, a second year player out of Nebraska, had three solo tackles in the first half.

Green Bay took its first possession after halftime and drove 79 yards down the field in seven plays to give former Tennessee Volunteer Rajion Neal a 12-yard score.  The Packers couldn’t convert a two-point conversion but still led the Titans 13-6 in the third quarter.

Charlie Whitehurst and rookie Bishop Sankey led the Titans on the following drive with Sankey finding his rhythm with five carries for 25 yards and a five yard touchdown reception from Whitehurst.  Travis Koons extra point tied the game at 13 with 2:32 remaining in the third quarter.

Rookie Zach Mettenberger saw his first action at quarterback in the fourth quarter, but didn’t have the start he had hoped for. Mettenberger was stripped of the ball on his wind up on the first drive and then threw an interception that bounced off of intended receiver Jackie Battle and into the hands of Korey Jones.

The Titans defense held the Packers to a 32-yard field goal with 7:02 remaining in the game to trail 16-13.

Mettenberger put away his early struggles and drove down the field with efficiency, completing three consecutive passes for 70 yards that set up an eight-yard touchdown run by Jackie Battle.

Bonani made his extra point attempt to put the Titans ahead 20-16 with 5:02 left to play.

The Titans head to New Orleans for their second preseason game Aug. 15 at 7:00 p.m. CT.  The Saints defeated the St. Louis Rams 26-24 in their preseason opener.Titans beat Packers in preseason opener, 20-16
