St. Jude Patient Denied Drug

Stream Fox 17 newscasts LIVE starting with Fox 17 This Morning at 5 am and News at 9 pm.

Sparking debate this morning---

The family of a 7-year-old boy from Virginia is desperately trying to get the boy access to a drug that could save his life, but the drug company is being very resistant.

Josh Hardy is currently at St. Jude's Children's Hospital here in Tennessee. His life is in limbo because of complications from a bone marrow transplant.

Josh's doctor says there is a drug that could save his life, but it is in the trial phase and the company won't provide it.

Chimerix CEO Kenneth Moch says his company had been releasing the potentially breakthrough anti-viral drug for compassionate use, for patients just like Josh, but they had to stop because of the growing number of requests. All the requests were slowing down research for FDA approval.

The family won't accept the drug company's answer. They have taken to social media to spread Josh's story, hoping it will change Moch's mind.
