SAVING YOU MONEY: Seasonal Jobs, Saving for Retirement, Never Buy New

Stream Fox 17 newscasts LIVE starting with Fox 17 This Morning at 5 am and News at 9 pm.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The approaching holidays aren't just a time to shop for gifts, they're a time to shop for a job. With unemployment stuck at more than 8%, seasonal jobs are your chance to get your foot in the door. Career Builder says nearly 40% of retailers are planning to hire more workers between October and December, and nearly half will eventually hire you permanently. Those jobs include everything from shipping and deliver to marketing and retail, but don't wait. Most employers will have positions filled by Halloween.

Once you get that job, or if you have steady work, it's time to plan. National Save for Retirement Week starts Sunday. The latest stats show 2/3 of us don't save enough for retirement. Experts caution you to resist the urge to spend more as you earn more, and the experts remind us not to borrow from our plans.

Finally, over the next several weeks, we're going to end this segment with one thing you should never buy new if you're trying to save money. In focus tonight? Cd's and dvd's. Used ones are a fraction of the cost. If by chance there's a scratch, US News and World Report says you can often remove scratches by rubbing it with a banana and even toothpaste. Give it a try and tell Stacy Case things you never buy new on Facebook and Twitter.
