FOX News--The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is proposing a rule targeted at improving the safety of food for animals and pets.

The rule will require companies which make animal feed and pet food sold in the United States to identify potential hazards and have a plan in place to prevent and correct such issues.

The proposed rule will be published on Tuesday and is the first time manufacturing practices which address the processing, manufacturing, packing and holding of animal food have been put in place to protect against contamination.

The final rules of the Food Safety Modernization Act must be finalized by the end of June 2015.
