Fraternity Suspended At Vanderbilt -- Sky Arnold

Nashville, TN -- Vanderbilt students are on fall break but that hasn't stopped the talk about the email scandal involving fraternity Alpha Tau Omega.

The fraternity is currently suspended because of an email that was sent by a now former member that many consider offensive.

The profanity laden email went to new recruits and it makes light of the recent Vanderbilt rape case.

In a sentence about a football watch party the student writes, "This will be a rape free event I promise.  Football is safe again."

Fox 17 interviewed several students about the email including Sophomore Brent Huang.

"I have a few friends in there of course it bothers me they are punished for one person," said Huang.

After learning of the email, both the university and national fraternity took action suspending the chapter from all activities.

Alpha tau Omega has also kicked the student who wrote the email out permanently.
"It has no place in Alpha Tau Omega," said Fraternity CEO Wynn Smiley. "How an email like that would have been attractive to a recruit boggles my mind.  I think the author of the email was making poor decisions all the way around."
Several students told Fox 17 News they believe the email was likely meant as a joke.

Senior Rachael Hamilton worries the incident looks bad for all members of fraternities and sororities.

"It makes us all sad.  I'm Greek myself and the way we talk to each other never never like that," said Vanderbilt Senior Rachael Hamilton.
