93 Year Old McMinnville Woman Killed In Cooking Accident -- Sky Arnold

A cooking accident killed a 93 year old McMinnville woman Wednesday morning.

Gladys Walker's son discovered her body after Meals on Wheels told him she wasn't answering the door.

Investigators believe Walker accidentally caught her clothes on fire while cooking breakfast when the material touched the flame on a stove.

"We think she sat down in a chair to remove some of her clothing and there was some clothing on the chair when she sat down on it it caught that on fire," said McMinnville Detective todd Rowland.  "It is a horrible thing and a tragedy."

The fire didn't spread beyond the kitchen because of a lack of oxygen.

Rowland says Walker had a number of rooms closed off with towels under the door.

Friends say Walker remained active and independent even at 93 years of age.

Marva Hughes has lived down the street from Walker for more than 50 years and fondly remembers the 93 year old's sense of independence.

Marva Hughes lives down the street and has fond memories of Walker's red truck and the 93 year old woman's sense of independence.

"She didn't wanna give in to let anybody do anything for her.  She was a reserved person that wanted to do everything herself," said Hughes.
