FDA seeks tougher rules on antibacterial soaps

Stream Fox 17 newscasts LIVE starting with TN Mornings at 5 am and News at 9 pm.

WASHINGTON, D.C. - A new FDA rule proposed yesterday would force the makers of antibacterial soaps and body washes to prove what they advertise is true. The FDA will require the manufacturers to prove products are safe for daily long term use and more effective than plain soap. If they can't prove it, it's off the shelves until products are reformulated or the labels are changed. Hand sanitizers, wipes and antibacterial products will not be affected by the new rule.
