Ruling: Effort To Restrict Meth Ingrediant Violates TN Law

Stream Fox 17 newscasts LIVE starting with Fox 17 This Morning at 5 am and News at 9 pm.

Nashville, Tenn--Efforts by a handful of Tennessee cities to keep cold and sinus medicine out of the hands of people to make meth violates state law. Tennessee Attorney General Bob Cooper made the ruling concerning  local ordinances requiring a prescription for drugs containing ephedrine or psuedoephedrine.

Nineteen cities, includling Winchester, have laws like that on the books right now. Cooper's opinion doesn't carry the force of law, but will likely have a chilling effect on any new ordinances. Critics have said they always consider the regulation of drugs a state rather than a local issue.
