Nashville Firefighters Keep Kids Warm

Scott Couch

Nashville, TN

Nearly four hundred metro school children have new, warm coats to wear thanks to Nashville firefighters.  Members of the International Association of Fire Fighters Union Local 140 gave coats to every student at Buena Vista Elementary School Wednesday.

It's part of what  the union calls "Operation Warm."  It chose Buena Vista with the help of metro schools because of the large number of students at Buena Vista who receive free or reduced price lunches.  The school's principal says many of her parents don't have the financial resources to equip their children for cold weather as well as they'd like.  She says in our recent twenty degree weather, several of her students came to school wearing only light sweatshirts and no gloves.

Now every student in school has a new coat.  The union bought the coats with money from two recent fundraising concerts.  Union president Mark Young says there are more than fourty one thousand middle Tennessee children who could use a coat.  The union hopes to buy more coats in the future and is looking for a corporate sponsor to help underwrite the cost.  To help call the IAFF union local at 615-417-3457.
