Bitter Cold Puts Strain on Electrical Grid

Stream Fox 17 newscasts LIVE starting with Fox 17 This Morning at 5 am and News at 9 pm.

NASHVILLE, Teen. - Right now, it's about 11 degrees outside and that means the electric system has to work harder to keep homes warm. The Tennessee Valley Authority has asked all its distributors including the Nashville Electric Service to do what they can to conserve energy. That's why those providers are asking all of you at home to turn off lights when you're not in the room and unplug any electronics that you're not using. It might sound strange but they say if you need to dry your clothes, run the dishwasher or use your oven, that you do so after 8pm. It might sound hard but they're also asking you to keep your thermostats at or below 68 degrees. The TVA says it will ease the strain on the system and your energy bill. The TVA normally in the winter sees consumption peak at 27,000 megawatts. Over the next 2 days they anticipate that increasing to as much as 32,000 megawatts.
